Wide Mouth Mason and The Balconies (w/interview)

Monday, Oct 1st.  8pm@ Club Absinthe – $15

Start your week off on a good note. Wide Mouth Mason is back in Hamilton on Monday to promote their latest release ‘No Bad Days’.

Supporting Wide Mouth Mason are The Balconies, and City and the Sea.

Ottawa’s The Balconies have had a great year and are riding the success of their latest release, Kill Count, right into Hamilton on Monday.  They are a fantastic high energy rock band that’s been building buzz across Ontario for a while. I was lucky enough to catch up with bassist Steve Neville.

Where do you like to play in Hamilton?
We have played Hamilton at least 10 times and most of those shows have been at The Casbah.  It is a great venue for a sweaty dance party. Brodie brings in great music and we love coming back there.

Do you listen to any bands from Hamilton?
We love The Reason, they put on a great show.  I’m also really into Spirits.

What are you listening to lately, aside from these Hamilton bands?
I’m really into The Aggrolites. They have a very cool raw sound and we’ve opened for them four times in Ontario.

The cover of Justin Bieber’s “Baby” that you guys worked on is terrific. What was that experience like?
It was great.  We love working with Mitch. (* that’s Mitch Fillion from Hamilton’s amazing Southern Souls). Our goal was to give that song a new sound without changing it around too much. It was a lot of fun and it got spread around by Alan Cross, CBC, and several blogs. It was a lot of fun.

Has Justin heard it?
I believe he has.

What’s next for The Balconies?
We are touring with Wide Mouth Mason for a few dates and are eventually heading down to the states. We are playing a festival in LA where we will be one of three Canadian bands. We are also working on a new video and are looking to release the second half of our EP in the coming year.
