10pm Friday August 31st at Homegrown Hamilton.
Some of Hamilton’s most amazing musicians that you’ve been missing all summer are back in town. Mother Tareka is releasing his EP “Rebel Funktion” Unleashing a brand new dosage of rebel funk truth-music dedicated to celebrating earth, love and the courage to fight and fuel the global struggle for freedom! Tibet to Syria to Turtle Island to the universe! As well as Crayzdom and Ill Hicks from the live funk hip-hop unit known as Infinity Factory, These truskool MC’s bring fierce lyricism, sharp unmatched vocal chemistry, and deliver a unique perspective on reality and fantasy. Also DJ Drop D will be spinning boomtastic revolutionary Hip-Hop, funk, and soulful conscious bounce frequencies from the heart. AND THIS JUST IN: A one night only super secret reunion appearance featuring all original members of one of Hamilton’s favourite literary jazz funk fusion jam bands!! Hint Hint; recognize the sticker in this picture? Read any books lately about the deep dark underground culture of San Franscisco’s beat junkies in the 50′s? If you don’t know you’d best find out!
Your host for this show will be MC Fitz Tha Resista and it is brought to you by peoplewhomakethings.ca.
The show starts at 10pm but if you want to catch some comedy beforehand, come early!
Saturday, Aug 18th. 10pm @ The Brain – $PWYC
Are you ready for a cover-free Saturday night dance party?
Come down to The Brain to see 3 of Southern Ontario’s finest beatmakers do their thing. These guys are good – very good.
This show includes: Toronto / Guelph’s Elaquent, and Hamilton’s beatmakin’ goldenboys: Motem, Sup∆83, and Ka$hkaval. Motem has just released a brand new mixtape – it’s a free download.
All four of the DJs performing get a lot of play on my iPod. So, come down to the Brain this Saturday to enjoy their fine selection of beer and even finer selection of DJ sets. You won’t regret it.
Friday, August 31st. 9:30pm @ Absinthe – $15 (limited)
One of Hamilton’s most talked about and anticipated hip hop shows is happening at the end of the month at Absinthe.
This show is so huge – it is already basically sold out. Tickets are unlikely to be sold at the door, instead you are encouraged to contact one of the performers (or the organizers via facebook) to see about securing a ticket.
This showcase style show features many amazing local lyricist and MCs. It is a stacked bill that includes: Hamilton Hi-Cats, Arcane, Lee Reed, Jai Steels, Every Day People, D-Toxx, UMSC, Transition & Topicz, J-Ache$, Certified, J Millah, Vision, Lady ASG, The Demon, and more.
The excitement about this show is in part due to a rare appearance by Canada’s Got Talent goldenboy: The Emsee, also know as Hamilton’s Matthew Cathcart.
I was able to catch up with Emsee recently and ask him a few questions about his career and the local hip hop scene.
Saturday, August 18th. 3pm @ Gage Park / 1030 @Absinthe – $Free
This Midsummer Night’s Dream festival has the potential to be the event of the summer. It has all the makings of an amazing all day summer party.
If the Facebook event page is anything to go by, this is one exciting party, with over 1000 confirmed guests and many many thousands pending. CBC Hamilton has also hyped this event.
I sat down with event organizer, Mark Gowland, to find out more about this intriguing event. Mark, as it turns out, is a genuine force of enthusiasm and positivity. Seriously. I walked away from our conversation feeling like I could accomplish anything!
Sat & Sun, August 11-12, noon-6pm @ Beasley Park – FREE
Come skate, break and recreate this weekend at downtown’s Beasley Park. The Beasley Neighbourhood Association & Hamilton Skateboard Assembly invite skateboard enthusiasts of all ages to join us at the Beasley Skate Park and Dr. Davey School parking lot for two days of activities and competitions.
On Saturday there will be youth activities including a mobile skate park and ultimate frisbee, and Sunday will feature the Battle of the Beaz breakdancing competition.
Meanwhile, the HSA will be running the 20th annual Skate Jam competition at the skate park both days. Several talented DJs will be on board all weekend to provide the best beats for the activities.
The schedule is as follows:
We are almost half way through August, where has the summer gone? Make sure you take advantage of all of the beautiful weather and the lovely out door activities August has to offer; starting with Art Crawl this week.
As always, we have a list of Art Crawl highlights for your crawlin’ consideration:
7pm @ Dr. Disc
Hamilton Magazine presents the second ‘Raise the Roof’ show in honour of Dr.Disc celebrating 21 years in business. I played a game of 21 Questions with owner, Mark, in July.
Performances are as follows:
7pm – Hachey the Mouthpiece
8pm – Sarah London
9pm – Lee Reed
10pm – Canadian Winter
Please bring non-perishable food items to this event.
The celebrations will continue into the later hours at The Casbah with a cover free after party.
De Facto at Mulberry
Local artist Jason Lee Rhyno is the featured artist for the month of August at the DF gallery. The show opens this Friday.
Jason Lee Rhyno primarily works with the drawing medium and his work suggests a preoccupation with line and a juxtapose of negative space with the masses of colour.
1030pm @ This Ain’t Hollywood – $5
End your night of Art Crawlin’ at the natural end point for the event – James St. and Murray St.
This party will feature four artists doing live art, and four DJs spinning all night long.
The theme for this party is: Retro Rave, and if you come dressed up in rave gear you only pay $2.50 to get in.
